The City of Sherbrooke speeds up transport electrification

SHERBROOKE, Friday, May 11th, 2018 – More than 700 Sherbrooke motorists have already made the choice to drive electric[1], an augmentation of nearly 80% compared to 2017. Even if the proportion of the car fleet is still modest (about 0, 5%), the increase in supply at dealers combined with recent gas price spikes are driving more and more motorists to explore the plug-in vehicle as an option for their next vehicle. An electric vehicle is four times less costly to operate than a comparable gasoline model and the gap grows with each price raise at the pump.

Transport electrification, a priority for the City of Sherbrooke

Branchez-Vous 2018, an initiative of the Innovative Vehicle Institute (IVI) which allows motorists to test drive plug-in vehicles in the company of experienced EV drivers and experts, is supported by the Gouvernement du Québec and Hydro-Québec as well as the City of Sherbrooke, host partner for the first time this year. “Transport electrification is a priority for the City of Sherbrooke. That is why, since 2013, we have been offering a subsidy for the purchase and installation of charging stations of up to $ 500. To date, we are proud to count 58 charging stations on our territory, four of which are municipally owned. In addition, the City of Sherbrooke will soon add two new charging stations in the La Grenouillère parking lot. I hope that an initiative like Branchez-vous incites others to adopt this type of vehicle, “says Steve Lussier, Mayor of the City of Sherbrooke.

Verbom: over 100 jobs related to electric vehicles

The electric vehicle market also offers real economic development opportunities for the region, as evidenced by the success of Verbom, a leader in sheet metal processing. “Our electric vehicle mandates currently occupy 120 people at our Sherbrooke facility. We are proud to participate in the region’s economic development, and our growth will continue thanks notably to the electrical shift picking up in transportation “says Eric Chenevert, CEO of Verbom.

An expanding selection of plug-in models at dealerships

Thanks to the collaboration of car manufacturers Chevrolet, Hyundai, Nissan, Ford and Honda, as well as dealers in the region, participants of the event Branchez-Vous 2018 Sherbrooke (May 11th-12th) will discover the pleasures of driving electric, compare the characteristics of several models and identify the vehicle(s) that can meet their needs. “In the first four months of 2018, there were more plug-in vehicles sold in Quebec than during the whole of 2014. A wider selection makes it possible to meet the needs of more consumers who, following their tests at Branchez-Vous, better measure all the benefits of driving electric “adds Stéphane Pascalon, project coordinator at IVI.
