The City of Gatineau welcomes Branchez-Vous 2018
The public is invited to test plug-in vehicles
GATINEAU, Friday, May 25th, 2018 – On May 25th and 25th, the City of Gatineau hosts the Branchez-Vous 2018 Gatineau event, an initiative of the Innovative Vehicle Institute (IVI) which allows motorists to test plug-in vehicles for free.
The City of Gatineau has been supporting transport electrification for many years, being the first city in the Outaouais region to join the large public charging network of the Electric Circuit (in 2013). Last fall, the Council decided to electrify part of the light-duty vehicle fleet by 2021, and on May 9th, the city announced the purchase of seven charging stations to power its fleet, as well as its plan to install up to 27 stations between 2018 and 2022.
Over 700 motorists in the Outaouais region (including more than 520 in Gatineau) have already made the choice to drive electric, a growth of nearly 80% compared to 2017. Between the offer increase at dealerships and recent gas price rise, more and more consumers are exploring the plug-in vehicle as an option for their next car. An electric vehicle is four times less costly to operate than a comparable gasoline model, and the gap grows with each price spike at the pump.
“This activity is part of the City Council’s program to help Gatineau contribute to the fight against climate change. The City encourages the adoption of technological solutions that reduce the ecological footprint of transportation and therefore invites the public to take advantage of the activity to explore the world of plug-in vehicles “says Mike Duggan, City Councillor, City of Gatineau.
The Association des véhicules électriques du Québec’s regional management supports the event by the involvement of its members as well as by a support to the promotion. “The volunteer EV drivers are happy to share their daily EV experience with visitors during Branchez-Vous 2018 Gatineau, which makes the experience even more rewarding than a simple dealership visit. Our active members also organize awareness events in the region. This sharing demystifies many aspects of EV driving with consumers who want to save money by foregoing gas in their travels, “adds Etienne Fortin, Regional Director, Association des véhicules électriques du Québec (AVÉQ).
Thanks to the support of the Gouvernement du Québec and Hydro-Québec, as well as the collaboration of car manufacturers Chevrolet, Hyundai, Nissan, Ford and Honda and local dealers, participants in the event Branchez-Vous 2018 Gatineau (May 25th-26th) will discover the pleasures of electric driving, compare the features of several models and identify the vehicle(s) that can meet their needs. “In the first four months of 2018, there were more plug-in vehicles sold in Quebec than during the whole of 2014. A wider selection makes it possible to meet the needs of more consumers who, following their tests at Branchez-Vous, better measure all the benefits of driving electric” adds Stéphane Pascalon, project coordinator at IVI.
