The Innovative vehicle institute, in collaboration with Hydro-Quebec and the Quebec government, presented four Branchez-Vous events, from mid-April to late June 2016, as a prelude to EVS29. With 20 different models presented to visitors, 3 710 test drives were carried out. Fully electric vehicles accounted for 77% of the trials and at the top of the list of tested vehicles were the Tesla Model S, the Nissan LEAF and the Kia Soul EV. As for plug-in hybrids (23% of trials), the Chevrolet Volt, the Ford C-Max Energi and the Ford Fusion Energi were the most popular.
In total, nearly 21 000 km were traveled during testing, no gas used, no GHG emitted. An average petrol vehicle would have consumed about 1 700 liters of gasoline and released nearly 4 tons of CO2 for the same distance! It is interesting to note that over 10 000 plug-in vehicles are currently used in Quebec, reducing the province’s vehicle fleet GHG emissions by tens of thousands of tons per year!
The testimonies collected confirm that, through the road tests and discussions with the vehicle owner, Branchez-Vous leads visitors to consider buying a plug-in vehicle, helps to consolidate their consideration, or helps finalize the choice of a vehicle. A survey conducted among people registered for test drives reveals that more than 4 in 5 (84%) will consider a plug-in vehicle for their next vehicle purchase.
The Branchez-Vous team emphasizes the invaluable contribution of the 193 volunteers of the event. These people come to share their experience in electric mobility with motorists who want to evaluate the different models. They accompany drivers, sometimes even in their own vehicle, and respond generously to the many questions. Several comments from visitors underlined the quality of exchanges with these passionate EV drivers. In addition to the individuals involved personally, Club Tesla Québec and the AVÉQ (Quebec Association of electric vehicles), two volunteer organizations, also lent a hand in the Branchez-Vous 2016 events.
At last, an important success factor is the involvement of the host cities: City of Montreal, City of Gatineau, City of Lévis and City of Drummondville. With their reception and technical support, and other concrete actions such as the installation of charging stations, these cities contribute to the promotion of transportation electrification and by extension to the improvement of the environmental performance of the vehicle fleet in their territories.
The 2017 edition is already under preparation for next Spring but in the meantime, Branchez-Vous will host the “Electric Zone” of the Super Auto Show on September 10th and 11th 2016. (link to the text below, separately published ).
